About PRP for Face and Scalp

What is PRP

To create platelet-rich plasma, clinicians take a blood sample from the patient and place it into a device called a centrifuge that rapidly spins the sample, separating out the other components of the blood from the platelets and concentrating them within the plasma. This solution is then placed into a syringe for injection into areas of the face or scalp.

How does PRP Work

PRP injections can be effective in treating baldness, both in preventing hair loss and promoting new hair growth. PRP can also aid in the stimulation of hair growth after hair transplants.

PRP injections are also used as an anti-aging treatment as the injection into the face and undereye area helps to stimulate collagen, increase volume, and improve skin texture.

What to Expect

Depending on your selected treatment area, the procedure can take anywhere from 45 minutes to just over an hour. Swelling, bruising and soreness may occur. You will see your results 3-6 months after completing your recommend series of treatments. Patients can expect increased hair growth to areas that may have been stagnant in producing follicles as well as overall skin texture and volume improvement to the face and under eyes for a period of 6-12+ month after completing a series of treatments (generally 3-6 depending on the area).

What do I need to do before my PRP appointment?

-Please arrive with clean skin so that we can properly assess your skin and determine where to make injections

-With permission from your prescribing physician stop taking blood thinners/daily aspirin

-Avoid NSAIDS (ie: ibuprofen), and/or Aleve for 1 week prior

-Avoid taking St. John’s Wort and Vitamin E for 1 week prior

-Avoid Retin-A, Tretinoin and Retinoids for 3 days prior

-Do not drink any alcoholic beverages for 24 hours prior

-Start Arnica tablets the day before treatment

-No dental appointments 2 weeks prior or 2 weeks following the injectable appointment

Does it hurt?

Topical BLT numbing agents are applied to decrease sensitivity pre-treatment. You will be given an ice pack after treatment to help reduce the swelling if needed.

What’s the downtime?

One of the things that makes PRP so great is there’s little downtime. Immediately after the treatment, there may be redness, bruising, swelling, tenderness and / or itching at or near the injection site. These symptoms are normal and should resolve within a few days. But for this reason we do not recommend scheduling your appointment right before a big event.

How long do results last?

Results can be seen immediately after treatment and will get better over the course of 2-3 weeks as the PRP integrates with your tissue. PRP can last anywhere from 6-12 months depending on the number of sessions performed and the injection area.
